SHANGHAI - Which professions do trust the most? According to a recent survey, firefighters rank top of the list.

The results of the survey, conducted by the Reader's Digest China magazine, was announced on Monday. The survey polled 1,103 Chinese last October.

Respondents, all aged 20 or older, were given two lists, one of 40 professions and another of 79 Chinese personalities selected by the magazine, and asked to rate each one's trustworthiness on a scale of one to 10.

The results show that people who are trusted most tend to have won approval from the public for outstanding achievements in their professional fields and their passion for the common good, said Tom Moore, editorial director of Reader's Digest Asia Pacific.

With firefighters topping the professions list, the other professions in the top 10 include soldier, farmer, teacher, weatherman, accountant/auditor, judge, bank clerk, doctor and chef.

Meanwhile, Yuan Longping, a leading Chinese agricultural scientist, was chosen as the most trustworthy. Zhong Nanshan, a doctor famous for exposing a cover-up of the SARS epidemic and who initiated steroid therapy in China, was chosen second and basketball star Yao Ming came in third.

Others in the top 10 include: athlete-turned-entrepreneur Li Ning; martial arts author Jin Yong; talk show host Cui Yongyuan; actor Pu Cunxin; Liu Chuanzhi, chairman of the Lenovo Group; Li Changping, scholar of agriculture; and news anchor Jing Yidan.

"Both of the rankings show that commitment and devotion are prioritized by the Chinese more than other factors. People are more concerned with what they have done for society," Reader's Digest China's senior editor Wang Bin told China Daily.

"Generally speaking, people who achieve professional success and have a heart that wants to serve society are more likely to win public trust. They also always live the simple life and keep a low profile, rarely becoming involved with media hype," he added.

Though the survey was a first in China, its results were in keeping with similar polls in Australia, Canada and Singapore, in that firefighters are cited first in those countries too.

"It's common that firefighters are trusted most since they have the most vital job of saving lives. They always appear when people are in need and seek no reward," said Yu Hai, sociology professor at Fudan University.

"After the earthquake in Yushu, Qinghai, many firefighters joined in the rescue work and saved people from disasters. Their job is to protect people's lives and property," Yu said.

Cui Yongyuan, the famous CCTV talk show host, said that he appreciates the trust he gained from people.

"It is one of the most important awards I have received during the past 47 years. In a world in which many people are madly chasing the richest list or other wealth-backed activities, it is really good to see some media concern about honesty and trust, and that someone conducted a survey on it. I hope more such activities will happen again in society."

  GONE WITH THE WIND

  CHAPTER 1

Scarlett O'Hara was not beautiful, but men seldom realized it when caught by her charm as the Tarleton twins were, In her face were too sharply blended the delicate features of her mother, a Coast aristocrat of French descent, and the heavy ones of her florid Irish father. But it was an arresting face, pointed of chin, square of jaw. Her eyes were pale green without a touch of hazel, starred with bristly black lashes and slightly tilted at the ends. Above them, her thick black brows lanted upward, cutting a startling oblique line in her magnolia--white skin--that skin so prized by Southern women and so carefully guarded with bonnets, veils and mittens against hot Georgia suns.

① Even the government officers admitted that some tax measures were

  unfair.

② The government officers admitted that even some tax measures were

  unfair.

③ The couple don‘t have much money to spend on their foreign trip.

④ The couple don‘t have to spend much money on their foreign trip.

⑤ The committee as a whole pointed out that the world economic

  situation had improved.

⑥ The committee pointed out that the world economic situation as a

  whole had improved.

⑦ In vain did David try to prevent the job from being done.

⑧ David tried to prevent the job from being done in vain.

⑨ Approaching the shop,泰語翻譯, Helen noticed two strangers.

⑩ Helen noticed two strangers approaching the shop.

  (11) I may visit a sometime lecturer of English language.

  (12) I may visit a lecturer of English language sometime.

  成“former ”或“previous”;後者就要變為“at a certain time”了。

  A: RIOT POLICE

  B: POLICE RIOT

1. _________ felt funny watching myself on TV. (全國II)

A. One B. This C. It D. That

it為形式主語,句子真正的主語是watching myself on TV。

2. He didn’t make _________ clear when and where the meeting would be held.

A,台北翻譯. this B. that C. it D. these

it為形式賓語,句子真正的賓語是when and where the meeting would be held。

1. He is always really rude, _________ is why people tend to avoid him.

A. that B. it C. this D. which

此題容易誤選 A,因為 that’s why… He is always really rude.

2. Tom’s mother always told him not to smoke again, but _________ didn’t help.

A. he B. it C. which D. as

三、注意those who的用法

Those who do not wish to go need not go.

We kept seats for those who might arrive late.

Let us spend a few moments in silence so that we remember those who died to preserve our freedom.

At the beginning the whole party kept together but by the end of the day those who were less fit had fallen behind.

四、注意that which的用法

That which (=What) many people say is not always true.

That which (=What) I say and do is my own affair.

They say the only real knowledge is that which can be measured.

A grandparent’s job is easier than that of a parent.

A dog’s intelligence is much greater than that of a cat.

The dialect in one town may he quite different from that of the next town.

The weather of Beijing is just as cold as that of Lanzhou, but colder than that of Shanghai.

It isn’t all that cold.

It’s about this high.

Is it this hot every day?

I didn’t think it would be this easy.

I didn’t realize she was that ill.

The book is about this thick.

When you pay that much for a meal you expect the best. Related articles:

Wild Nights---Wild

這位詩人的另一首詩 “The Soul Selects Her Own Society”, 標題本身就是運用提喻的修辭手法,

Prithee, say aye or no;
If thou’lt not have me, tell me so;

請你說一聲行不行;
你若要我,就對我挑明;

比如, “You had your breakfast

be or not to be, that is the question

The Soul Selects Her Own Society
Emily Elizabeth Dickinson

The Soul selects her own society---
Then---shuts the Door---
To her divine Majority---
Present no more---

Unmoved she notes the chariots---
pausing---
At her low Gate---
Unmoved---an Emperor be kneeling---
Upon her Mat---

I’ve known her---from an ample nation---
Choose One---
Then---close the valves of her attention---
Like Stone---

然後謝客關門;

姑娘不聞不問;

唯獨選中一人;

Brett has just returned from a trip to Iceland. He’s filling his sister Helen in on the details.

Helen:So, Frosty, how was your trip to the frozen north? Meet any other snowmen?

Brett:That shows what you know. Iceland may be chilly, but it's one of the hottest places in Europe.

Helen:I have heard it’s become a popular tourist destination. Reykjavik is trendy with a lot of globetrotters nowadays.

Brett: I'm not talking about its popularity. I'm talking about the ground temperature there. Iceland’s full of hot springs.

Helen:Hot springs in Iceland? What are they like,印度語翻譯?

Brett:They're amazing! The Blue Lagoon is a mineral-rich seawater lake heated by lava. It's near a power plant outside Reykjavik, and it’s absolutely spectacular.

Helen:It's near a power plant?! Thanks, but I'll pass. I'd like to have children someday.

Brett:That's what I thought at first, too. But it actually turns out that the water in the lake is considered healthy. It has a high content of salt and silica3, and they say it can help cure skin problems like psoriasis and eczema.

Helen:I think I’ll stick to my bathtub. Besides, Iceland’s a long way from here.

Brett:Suit yourself, but you’re missing out on the best bath in the world!

Suffering loss without redress

Suffering loss without redress” 吃啞巴虧。

           ,航空翻譯;Because of lack of proof, he could not bring a case to court and suffered loss without redress veduchina ,英語翻譯社;

He was unwilling to suffer loss without redress so that he revenged the one who attacted him secretly  veduchina.
